Super Gold for a Super Cheese

Super Gold for a Super Cheese

Congratulations to Lyburn Farmhouses Cheeses for receiving a coveted Super Gold for their Stoney Cross cheese in the World Cheese Awards 2022. Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, this year’s Awards attracted more than 4,000 entries from over 40 countries with a jury of accomplished judges including food commentators, retailers and buyers, among them James Golding, Group Chef Director at THE PIG.

The announcement comes just in time to plan cheese boards for winter suppers and festive celebrations.

Only 11 cheeses in the UK received the Super Gold accolade. Mike Smales of Lyburn Farmhouse Cheeses said: “We are very pleased with the result at the World Cheese Awards. Stoney Cross has done well this year and continues to grow in poularity. It also won Gold at the British Cheese Awards. It looks like we will have to enlarge the ripening room for next year.''

Stoney Cross is Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers’ youngest offering. It is a mould ripened cheese, not dissimilar to a French Tomme De Savoie. It has a creamy, buttery texture, sweet flavours and an earthy finish. It is the perfect addition to a cheeseboard, even those who like a strong cheese enjoy Stoney Cross’s subtle flavour and smooth texture.

Congratulations to other regional cheese makers who also scooped Awards in the World Cheese Awards 2022. These included Hampshire Cheese Company who received Gold for their Winslade cheese, a Vacherin/Camembert cross in a spruce collar, and Two Hoots Cheese who received Silver for Barkham Belle, a smooth, creamy cheese based on an Alpine-style cheese, and Baby Barkham, a mini version of their popular blue cheese. Two Hoots Cheese also picked up Bronze for their Barkham Blue, a rich blue cheese with a buttery texture.

Together these award-winning local cheeses create a perfect Hampshire cheeseboard.
