What's in Season Now
September is harvest time with an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Apples are a classic favourite of the season. They can be turned into crumbles and pies, tossed with walnuts and cheddar and leaves for a Waldorf salad, or made into a sauce to accompany a pork dish.
But what about making your own dried apple rings – a lovely alternative to sweets in children’s lunch boxes? Simply core the apples and cut them into rings (you can peel off the skins if you wish). Brush with lemon juice (to stop them discolouring) and bake on a rack in the oven for six to 12 hours, depending on preference, at a very low temperature – about 65 degrees C. Then store in airtight containers for up to three days.
