New Winery for The Grange

New Winery for The Grange

The wait is over and The Grange's impressive new winery is open, with the builders leaving just in time for this year’s (rather good) harvest to be processed.

Picking started on 7th October. The long, dry summer of 2022 will not only go down as a great one for English grapes, but it was also good for the seamless construction of The Grange’s sleek new winery. The winery is the fruit of several years of thinking and planning. It is also the meeting of three minds: Zam Baring, Director of The Grange, Timothy Hatton, of Timothy Hatton Architects, and Harry Pickering, The Grange’s Head Winemaker. With a current capacity of 50,000 bottles a year (rising to 160,000 over time), the team are very excited about the new winery providing the opportunity to refine The Grange’s exquisite house style while starting to develop their own still wines as well as making wine under contract for growers across the country.

The winery at Burge’s Field will allow the team to take fruit from the vineyard, just 75m away, at the moment of perfect ripeness, and press and ferment the resulting juice, under the exacting eye of Head Winemaker Harry Pickering, into precise, full and elegant wines that perfectly reflect the unique aspect, microclimate and soils of this delightful patch of Hampshire downland.

Harry Pickering is The Grange’s first In-house Winemaker, joining last June from esteemed Gusbourne in Kent. His appointment was a result of a three-month global search. He has been busy overseeing the outfitting and construction of the winery over the last nine months and can’t wait to start doing what he loves most - making something magical from the Burge’s Field grapes.

The winery will provide a new HQ for The Grange, and the whole team, from viticulture to sales, are thoroughly overexcited about getting into one space and opening this major new chapter in the company’s life. There will also be a Phase Two. While Phase One focused on developing The Grange’s ability to create and deliver world-class wines, Phase Two will enable the team to deliver further the consumer-facing side of The Grange.
