Hattingley Valley Wine toasts success
The team at Hattingley Valley Wines located near Alresford is raising a glass of their own English sparkling wine to celebrate their recent winning streak.
Hattingley’s Blanc de Blancs 2011 Magnum came away from the prestigious Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC) 2017 as World Champion by style.
The same wine also picked up a Gold Medal, Best in Class English Magnum and Best in Class English Blanc de Blancs.
The team attended the award ceremony at Vintners’ Hall last week and were delighted to be crowned World Champions again, beating all international competition for the title.
This makes Hattingley Valley the first English wine producer to win two World Champion titles in this prestigious competition, with their Rose 2011 crowned World Champion Vintage Rose in CSWWC 2014.
Simon Robinson established Hattingley Valley in 2008. Following in depth feasibility studies, the first 28 acre south facing site was planted in May of that year. Alongside Emma Rice, founder of Custom Crush, a wine analysis laboratory and wine making consultancy, they planned the modern, eco-friendly winery in Wield that was completed in 2010. It uses the latest technology and equipment from continental Europe, has sophisticated waste disposal facilities and was the first UK winery to adopt solar power.
The wine making team is made up of Emma Rice and Jacob Leadley, both of whom trained at Plumpton, Will Perkins who is currently studying there, James Byrnes from New Zealand and Zoë Driver, UK’s first Winemaker Apprentice. The vineyard team is headed up by Jim Bowerman and Romain Henrion.
