British Sausage Week Hampshire style
Toad in the hole, sausage sandwich, hot pot, sausage roll, fry up.... its hard to choose a favourite! Sausages are a versatile and quick to cook food and it's easy to see why they have become such a staple in our kitchens. We all have our favourite go to sausage dishes but this week's British Sausage Week (31 October - 6 November) is a great excuse to try a new sausage recipe with plenty of local producers sharing their top recipes.
There is a great choice for sausage fans in Hampshire with quality bangers being made across the county from locally produced meat. Each year local butchers and producers go head to head in the Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition where tables of sausages are tasted and tested by a panel of national judges.
With so many top producers in the county there is no need to go bog standard when it comes to sausages. Local farm shops, farmers' markets, Southern Co-operative stores all stock proper sausages with many farmers also delivering straight to your door.
Lots of Hampshire producers are celebrating British Sausage Week with offers, recipes and competitions. Newlyns Farm Shop near North Warnborough is sharing a recipe each day of Sausage Week including this delicious Toad in the Hole. They also have plenty of sausage history and facts as well as the chance for you to win £20 of sausages.

Uptons of Bassett near Southampton is offering tastings all week and will be wowing customers with sausage making demonstrations in store. They are also taking bookings for their next sausage making masterclass on Wednesday 17th May at 6.30pm. The course includes breaking down the pork, boning pork cuts, differernt types of sausage and how to tie them. Find out more.
The Sun Inn near Basingstoke is donating 50 per cent of profits from sausage dishes to a local charity, Basingstoke Foodbank. Landlord and Head Chef, Gordon Stott, has created two dishes; black pudding toad in the hole with bacon crumb and apple purèe plus a main course of whole grain pork sausage, pomme purèe, onion jam, broccoli and truffle jus. The pub recently gained a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the 2017 Michelin Guide.
