The Winchester Bakery Opens

The Winchester Bakery opened their first shop and café, next to he Buttercross, Winchester, on Wednesday 6th April. They are expecting to be busy with the launch day attracting a massive amount of interest - including children with their noses pressed up against the window, dazzled by the tempting treats inside.

The Winchester Bakery shop will sell artisan breads, cakes, macarons, pastries and savoury treats. The Winchester Bakery will also serve speciality coffee and other drinks. Customers can take their treats away or enjoy them in the beautifully restored upstairs seating area surrounding the magnificent Tudor fireplace of this grade II listed building.

Everything is baked under two miles away at The Winchester Bakery’s production kitchen in Winnall. The Winchester Bakery originally launched as a wholesale business in 2020 and quickly became popular, supplying local restaurants and cafes. The next step was to open a retail shop in the heart of Winchester.

The bakery team is led by experienced Bakery Manager, Darren North, fondly known as a Master of Sourdough. He works mostly with local suppliers using centuries-old bread baking methods with modern equipment. He also searches out unique ingredients which he incorporates into The Winchester Bakery’s range. The Winchester Bakery recently joined Hampshire Fare in order to work closely with other local producers.

Nick Hanson, Director, The Winchester Bakery, said: ‘The success of the wholesale business and our great baking team has led us to open our first shop. We have worked closely with heritage groups and specialist builders to restore sympathetically this historic building. We are now excited to be opening our doors to serve delicious breads and bakes and to show off this beautiful building.

The shop and café will be open every weekday 7.30am to 5.30pm; Saturday 8.00am to 5.30pm; Sunday 9.00am to 4.30pm.
