The Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition returns!
Hampshire's finest butchers, meat producers and caterers gathered at the Holiday Inn in Winchester on Tuesday 9 April to take part in the Great Hampshire Sausage & Pie Competition 2013 organised by Hampshire Fare. The event was sponsored by Lucas Ingredients, Dalziel and BPEX.
Back after a two-year break, the only county competition of its kind attracted 170 entries across 12 categories. The quality and range of creative flavours impressed the panel of expert and guest judges.
The title of Supreme Sausage Champion 2013 was awarded to Martin Martindale of Greenfield Pork Products. Martin also won the title when the competition was last held in 2010. He was pleased with the result:
'We're delighted to have won the title of Supreme Sausage Champion 2013! I'm pleased for my son Tom for winning the Speciality Pork Sausage category for his chilli and garlic sausage too. The competition is really important to us as it helps us to gain local recognition. The feedback from the judges is really useful in helping us move forward and make our products even better. It's a lot of work getting prepared for the competition but it's worth it, I find it easiest to work on my entries at night when the business is closed. We'll be celebrating tonight though!'
Judges awarded 67 Gold Awards, 52 Silver Awards and 27 Bronze Awards. Winners of each category:

3) Lamb/beef Sausage - Smedleys Butchers for Italian beef
4) Hampshire Sausage - LJ Smith Butchers for Pork and Lyburn Garlic and Nettle Cheese
5) Home-cured bacon - Tatchbury Manor Farm for Oak Smoked Bacon
6) Meatballs and Faggots - Owtons at Chalcroft
7) Traditional Pork Pies - Uptons of Bassett
8) Hot Eating Pies - Newlyns Farm Shop for Steak and Onion Pie
9) Cold Eating Pies - Uptons of Bassett for Pork and Game Pie
10) Ready Meals - Lifestyle Catering
11) Black pudding - no gold awarded this year
12) Hampshire Charcuterie - Newlyns Farm Shop for Ham Hock Terrine
Mike Wright, Chairman of Hampshire Fare, was delighted to see the return of the competition and was involved in this year's judging: 'Today's competition has been a real showcase and celebration of local produce. The number of entries is testament to the active and enthusiastic local farming and meat trade. We are fortunate in Hampshire to have so many talented local producers dedicated to delivering top quality meat products.'
The Supreme Sausage Champion will go on to represent Hampshire at the Champion of Champions Competition being held in October.
