Sweet Taste of Success

Kim Murphy of Choccomondo has been awarded a bronze medal for her novelty chocolate cake and a merit for her chocolate showpiece at the prestigious Wessex Salon Culinaire Competition 2014, one of the largest live culinary competitions in the UK, held at Brockenhurst College, Brockenhurst.

Kim was particularly delighted as this was the very first time she had entered a professional competition.

Kim said: “I created an all-chocolate shoe cake covered in top quality Belgian chocolate decorations including chocolate shoes, mock croc textured chocolate shoe box, chocolate perfume bottle, with a traditional-style tasselled atomiser, and chocolate pearlised bracelet, with the hat box made of cake - covered in white chocolate of course!!

“The chocolate showpiece took around three days to complete and weighed in at 5lb. Many different techniques were used in this, including moulding, spraying, coloured cocoa-butters and chocolate clay. I managed to get both pieces to the competition without breaking them – only to knock off a petal from the showpiece while placing it for judging! An emergency operation had to be performed with chocolate ready melted from a thermos flask, I hope the judges didn’t see the join!

“My next project is to make a white chocolate tall ship for the Jubilee Sailing Trust – don’t think that this one will be plain sailing somehow!"
