Mark explains the inspiration behind starting Betteridge Brewery:

After 37 years in the Army, 9 years with the Royal Regiment of Wales and the remainder as a pilot in the Army Air Corps, retirement came age 55. Struggling with what to do as a second career and exasperated with corporate bureaucracy and jargon I decided that in the middle of a recession I would go it alone and start my own business. Eighteen months later I have set up my own small microbrewery with the intention of providing small quantities of good quality real ale to local people. A great supporter of village life and local issues, I wanted to use locally sourced ingredients where possible and to provide real ale to local pubs and organisations including my local pub in Hurstbourne Tarrant. The George and Dragon re-opens this August Bank Holiday after years in the doldrums.  Essential in my quest was to get the village involved in tasting and to ensure I provide what they and the local villages like to drink.

Everyone is now aware of the micro brewing revolution and the rediscovery of ale that tastes like ale and the huge number of variations on this. Bitterness, maltiness, hopiness and mouthfeel together with a pleasing look and aroma make the perfect combination and I have tried to ensure a good variety to please all tastes. My initial range includes a good best bitter, (Private Sector), a cream stout, (Serious Black) and a delicious golden ale with some fantastic hops in it which is called Jenny Wren.  More will come as I progress on my venture into getting beer into pubs and looking forward to people asking for it. Bottling will follow too. I work alone at the moment - a one man band in order to ensure that everything is my responsibility from quality of product to customer care and service.  I love it and learn something every day. I am looking forward to getting to festivals and farmers markets and hope to see you all there. Look out for the brand.
