Create & Cook finalists 2011
Year 9 pupils Lucy Miles and Seb Ward of Thornden School in Chandler’s Ford are two of eight finalists in Hampshire’s teenage cookery competition, Create and Cook, run in conjunction with July’s Hampshire Food Festival.

Create and Cook is an innovative cookery competition aimed at secondary school pupils aged 12-14 years across Hampshire. The competition, now in its third year, was devised by Andy Mackenzie, Executive Chef at Lainston House Hotel near Winchester and fit2cook food education, a member of county food group Hampshire Fare. The competition aims to engage and inspire young cooks to design creative menus using food that has been sourced locally.

Searching out local ingredients was a key part of the competition so Lucy and Seb were delighted to discover the stone-ground flour from the Bursledon Windmill near Southampton and use it in their courgette and cheese tart.

“Lucy and Seb have used local flavours in a really creative way, they are clearly great young cooks and we look forward to tasting their menu at the Create and Cook final” explained Min Raisman from fit2cook food education that runs the Create and Cook competition sponsored by The Southern Co-operative.

Lucy and Seb, along with three other pairs of young cooks from across Hampshire, will cook their menus in front of a panel of judges on Thursday 7th July at Newlyns Farm Cookery School near Hook.

The other finalists in the competition are Kitty Chevalier and Steph Carter of Robert May's School in Odiham, Sophie Harris and Danielle Carpenter of Bitterne Park School in Southampton, plus Pippa Robinson and Kathryn Peer of Swanmore College of Technology in Bishop's Waltham.

As well as receiving a trophy, the winning pair will be awarded £700 for their school food technology department and a cookery masterclass with top Hampshire Chef Andy Mackenzie from Lainston House Hotel.

Andy said: “I am really keen to encourage fresh young talent and through this competition we are discovering some really passionate young chefs which is fantastic.”
